Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) / Safety Engineer – Airport Project

We’re hiring an experienced Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) / Safety Engineer for a major airport construction project. This is a high-visibility role on a great project with steady work in an active airfield environment.

About the Role

You’ll be responsible for implementing company and client safety and health policies on site to ensure all project work is delivered safely and in full compliance with applicable regulations. You’ll serve as the primary safety leader on the ground, working closely with superintendents, project managers, subcontractors, and client representatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct project safety inductions, daily safety briefings, weekly toolbox talks, and safety training for all site personnel.

• Prepare Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) / Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for project activities.

• Perform and document regular safety inspections of work areas, equipment, and operations.

• Communicate effectively with employees, supervisors, managers, and client representatives on safety expectations and performance.

• Lead incident investigations and prepare clear, thorough written reports with root causes and corrective actions.

• Identify hazards and risks, recommend and track corrective actions, and verify closure.

• Ensure compliance with 29 CFR 1926, EM 385-1-1, and other applicable safety regulations and contract requirements.

• Maintain and monitor safety equipment (PPE, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, etc.).

• Lead and document safety meetings, including management and subcontractor safety coordination meetings.

• Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports and metrics.

Qualifications / Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years of construction industry safety experience where safety was your sole responsibility (dual-role safety positions will not be accepted).

• CHST or ASP (or equivalent) certification preferred.

• At least 1 year of experience working in an airport environment, with exposure to live airfield operations and coordination.

• Completion of the OSHA Outreach 30-Hour Construction Course (required).

• Current First Aid / CPR / AED certification.

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

• Ability to work 10–12 hour shifts, including night shifts, as required by project needs.

• Airfield construction and rehabilitation experience desirable, including airfield paving and electrical installation work.

• Ability to work in a team environment and contribute across a business unit or area.

• Strong self-management skills and the ability to motivate yourself and others to achieve high standards of safety compliance.

• Familiarity with EM 385 and NAVFAC construction regulations (or ability to quickly become proficient).

• Current OSHA 500 Trainer card preferred.

• Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
